Meaning of the name of Jiangyin
"River shade", since it is near the south, or shady, bank of the Yangzi River.
Location
Near the south bank of the Chang Jiang (Yangzi River), about 45 km north of Wuxi.
History
Traditionally a farming area, the residents of Jiangyin have recently become among the most wealthy in China, due to the rapid economic expansion enjoyed by this area.
A 6-lane highway suspension bridge is being constructed across the Yangtze River at Jiangyin. When completed in 1999 it was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, with a span of 1,385 metres (4,500 feet).
Language
Jiangyin is in the Northern Wu Language area, which means the inhabitants speak a dialect similar to that of Shanghai.
