Luzhi - Know More
Luzhi Town was praised as the First Town of Chinese Watery Regions. Besides its unique scenery and natural beauty, there are also many famous historic sites, like Wansheng Rice Shop, Xiaozai House, Shen House, Wangtao Memorial, etc.
A brief history : Because Lu Qiumeng, a poet named Fu Li in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), once lived there in seclusion, it was called Songjiang Fuli in ancient times. The town was renamed as Luzhi in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), after Luduan, a mysterious unicorn, which was believed to have the power of warding off evils.
Xiaozai House
Built in 1889 during the latter years of the Qing dynasty, the Xiaozai house with typical style of many houses in the south of Yangtze river. The residence was built by an official in the Qing dynasty and was tranferred later to the Xiao family. During the 20th century, the Xiao family's most famous offspring was Xiao Fangfang, a movie actress in Hong Kong. The residence contains an exhibition hall of her achievements in film over the past 50 years.
Wansheng Rice Shop
The Wansheng rice shop was established by two wealthy businessmen surnamed Shen and Fan in 1910. The business was successful and grew into a major rice distribution center in Luzhi township with more than 100 warehouses for storing rice. The shop was memorialized by the author Ye Shengtao, who wrote a text called 'Three or Five Dou More' (a dou is a unit of measure) which was based on the Wansheng rice shop. Ye's text later became a staple work of textbooks used by middle school students throughout China. Ye had taught at the 5th High School in Luzhi from 1917-22, and was a well-known figure in the May Fourth movement.
