There have been furthermore in modern times China's great literary master Mao Dun, caricaturist Feng Zikai, the legendary master of the overseas Chinese culture Sun Muxin, who went out of Wuzhen, and left their eternal footprints in Chinese and world history.

Wuzhen attracts more than two millions of tourists from both home and abroad each year. It has among the first batch of the Four A-level Scenic Areas appraised by the National Tourism Bureau, and has gained the "2003 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award".

Many of them breed silkworms and raise chrysanthemums, and they have mostly retained the tradition of buying fruit and vegetables from trade boats through the windows of their waterside houses. Wuzhen food with strong local flavors, is quite popular among the tourists. Big restaurants and small street stalls offer a great variety of delicious local food. In some old restaurants, like Jiujiang Lou and Shanyang Guan restaurants visitors can try the famous local dish Steamed Pork Slices with Glutinous Rice Flour Wrapped in Lotus. Travelers can also choose to dine at one of the locals' homes, and it is a good chance to learn some Chinese. Food is simple but dining at a local's home may provide a quite different experience.
